Dancing
With Class - Core Program
In the Fall, Winter, and Spring of each school year, we provide
Chicago-area schools with the opportunity to complete our 10-session
core program. This program introduces students to five different
forms of ballroom/partner dance and culminates in a regional Dance-Off
with other participating schools. The program is designed for
4th-6th grade participants and requires an actively involved faculty
mentor at the school. Classes can be conducted during the school
day or after school. Openings are limited for involvement in this
program.
In-School
Workshops & After-School Programs
Beyond our Core Program, which can be structured as an after-school
option, we also offer many customized programs to fit your needs.
A few options include:
- Dance Around the World (NEW!) – Students travel to
Europe, Africa, Asia, North and South America to learn about
regional movement styles. Perfect for early elementary!
- Social Dance - Basics and Continuing – Flexible format
classes can cover dances ranging from Samba to Steppin’. We’ll
work with you to design a curriculum that is appropriate to
your group’s interests and ability.
- Hip-Hop & More – Experienced dance professionals provide
training in contemporary dances and styles including hip-hop,
line dance, and more. The emphasis is on FUN and movements and
music will be tasteful and age-appropriate.
- Fitness Dance – Make movement and dance part of a
healthy lifestyle. Material is designed to strengthen and tone
the body through dance-based movement. This class is also popular
for adults!
- Specialty Dances – Our teaching artists have backgrounds
in everything from Tap to Yoga to Folk Dance. If you
have a special request, we'll pair you with a well-qualified
instructor for your chosen genre.
Any of these programs can be as brief as a single-day workshop or
as long as a full school year. Our in-school workshops make a great
supplement to P.E., arts, and language curriculum and can be thematically
related to various cultures of the world (for example, Latin American
dances), periods of history (for example, Dances of the Harlem Renaissance), or general themes such as respect and teamwork.
Workshops can be conducted with either a single instructor or a
pair of instructors and can accommodate large groups as long as
space permits.
Assemblies
Our performance-based programs expose large groups of students to
the different styles of ballroom, Latin, and swing. Each assembly
weaves live dance performances with student interaction and spoken
narrative components. Assemblies can be performed in either an auditorium
or gymnasium setting and typically last 40-50 minutes.
Current assembly offerings:
- Ballroom Blitz: This program emphasizes the etiquette
of dance and introduces students to basic partner dance concepts
such as lead & follow, dance frame, open and closed position,
etc. It includes live demonstrations of smooth ballroom dances
such as waltz, fox trot, tango; rhythmic Latin dances such as
salsa, merengue, cha-cha; and contemporary American dances such
as line dance and several styles of swing.
- Swing Time: In this interactive program on American
jazz dance and music history, high-flying, athletic performances
get students hooked, and then fascinating stories and learning
experiences unfold. We hit a home run with students by showing
the relationship between current pop culture trends and America’s
rich music, dance and cultural history. This exhilarating program
has toured in more than 100 Chicagoland schools since 1999.
- Specialized Shows: Our artists can also create customized
performances geared toward special themes such as an all-Latin
program for Hispanic Heritage Month, a 1920s Charleston show
for a Great Gatsby event, and more.
Teen & Parent-Child Formats
Fortnightly/Cotillion: Our take on this traditional program
for middle school students includes an emphasis on social etiquette
with a new Millennium perspective. These programs typically last
6-8 weeks and cover the basics of 4 different dances.
Parent-Child Dance: For families with children in elementary
school, we can provide either a single workshop or a multi-week
series that will get parents and kids moving together. This works
great as a stand-alone program or as a series that culminates
in a parent-child social event.
Homecoming and Prom Prep: At the high school level, we
can gear our dance programs to prepare kids for annual school
dances. We emphasize basic etiquette and provide a fun array of
dance steps that can be applied to many styles of music.
Professional Development/Teacher
Training
We are a certified CPDU provider and offer training for educators that focuses on our specific methodologies
for teaching dance to young people. Our training is perfect for
P.E. and arts/music teachers who intend to make dance a regular
part of their curriculum. We hold a Professional Development seminar in our studio once a year.
We also can hold on-site PDs at your school or organization.
Click here for more info and to register for our next full-day professional development seminar,
scheduled for June 25, 2009. Teachers earn 8 CPDU credits by attending!

Here is what past participants have to
say:
What a wonderful program you have! My son was thrilled to
be part of it. I know in today's world that we're all in a hurry
and sometimes we don't take the time we should to say "Thank You,"
so I wanted to send you this note. I watched my son's self-esteem
rise last night…and that…was worth everything!
- Mother of DwC Core Program Participant
I just wanted to thank you again for all your hard work in
making this program such a success. It has been a great joy for
our students and me personally to be involved. All of our students
wanted to give you a big hug and thank you from them.
- Classroom teacher involved with DwC Core Program
I was at several parties, sports events and school related
functions this weekend and I wanted to pass along some of the
comments that I received regarding the dance class. Every parent
that approached me was extremely positive and thrilled with the
class thus far. A few were hoping that we could keep it going
all year long.
- PTO organizer for Middle School Fortnightly Program
I had calls last night from parents saying that they have
spent a ton of money on dance classes and their child could never
show them anything. But in just one class with (MayI teaching
artist), their child could show almost everything they learned!
- Resource coordinator for After-School Hip-Hop Class
I love my dance teacher because she is the best dancer in
the whole wide world.
- 3rd grade after-school program participant
The presentation was awesome! The students were eager to
share their enthusiasm about the performance, and the teachers
were excited to be part of that, as well as enjoying the performance
themselves.
